Game Rap: USC
Kevin Peay
CrimsonUtes.com writer

UTAH GOT WYNNED!

I didn’t write anything after the Montana State because the Utes didn’t show us anything. However, this week was a completely different story.
This team is tough! There were outmanned several times and still found ways to make plays defensively. The defense is good and possibly great. They have always thrived on being a bend but don’t break defense and they usually make plays that change the game. Against USC they forced 3 turnovers to keep the game close, even winnable. On offense one thing is for sure, DeVonte Christopher is good, and he will force teams to game plan around him. Jordan Wynn is still terrible, the only difference is now he has a side arm noodle. This will be the Utes Achilles heel this season. They will have an opportunity to win every week, because of the defense. Wynn isn’t capable now, never has been capable and never will be capable of putting them in a position to win.
Utah went into the USC game as an 8.5 point underdog. Most Ute fans would have taken that bet and felt like they were robbing candy from 2 year old. In the end the Utes didn’t cover that spread. The game was much closer than the final score reflected and at times Utah looked like the better team. The problem is the quarterback doesn’t allow them to be the better team.
I don’t want to get on a soapbox and preach my good graces here, but since I can. I have never liked Jordan Wynn, not from the first time he came into a game for the Utes. I have taken an incredible amount of grief over the last three years for this stance and still have not wavered based on what I see on the field. I didn’t understand the decision to pull Terrance Cain who was 7-1 at the time and finished his career at Utah 12-2. That being said, as Utah entered the PAC-12 this season I thought it was important that they had some continuity at quarterback. However, I was skeptical as I felt any offense designed to have Wynn attempt to win the game with his arm was doomed. After the USC game, I am sure that Wynn is not the answer. As long as they run an offense predicated on the quarterback throwing the ball to win the game. He just doesn’t have “IT” any of “IT”, no size, no strength, no speed, no arm, no leadership, and no ability to make plays. I just don’t understand why they keep hindering a deep talented team, with a coward at quarterback who only makes them worse.
In the second half the Utah defense settled in giving the offense 6 opportunities to tie or take the lead. Even the last drive of the game, that placed the Utes in position to tie the game with a field goal, should have been better. On several of the plays the USC defense had blown coverage, and left Utah receivers wide open. The receivers Wynn threw to were not the open ones. The last play before the blocked field goal is a great example of who Wynn is as a quarterback. He predetermined where he was going to go with the ball instead of reading the defense. Had he taken the time to survey the field and understand the situation he would have realized that there was no one in the middle of the field to cover his tight end, who broke free WIDE OPEN and would have scored the game winning touchdown. I know, it sounds like a bunch of would a, could a, should a. The problem is that is Jordan Wynn in a nutshell. Utah will spend all season saying would a, could a, should a - with him as their starting quarterback. I realize there isn’t much behind him in way of experience, but who knows what will happen out on the field, it can’t be much worse than what is out there now!

5 cups of water: Utah Defense, who kept the game close and gave the Utes chances to win
4 cups of water: DeVonte Christopher, who proved how great a receiver he has become
3 cups of water: Marc Tyler, who was a beast in his first game of the season
2 cups of water: Robert Woods, followed up his record setting performance with a solid game
1 cup of water: Matt Barkley, he is very talented and gave Utah fits with his decision making
