I live in Mount Laurel, New Jersey. I have a 7 year old daughter, her name is Sage...I am not sure if she knows who the Utes really are but if you ask her who her favorite team is she will tell you "Utah Utes". I work in the telecommunications field for a company called SNiP. This might not be the best thing to say but my best friend out in New Jersey is Vai Sikahema...yes he played for BYU in the early 80's but he is real cool. We have a huge party every year and talk trash to each other every time the Utes play the Cougars. Life is good...I miss Utah...Go Utes!!!

To all the younger Ute fans, a little history lesson for you: Rowley was the real deal. Any ball that was thrown at, around or near him, you felt confident that he was going to catch it. And most likely score. A true joy to watch. Thanks for the article!

Bryan,
How will the Utes put such a devastating loss behind them. Did coach Mac do anything to help the team recover from such a loss?

Kirk,
If you have a good team it is not hard to get over a devastating loss. Good players and good coaches let the loss fuel the fire for the next week. Coach Mac did some pretty crazy things to help us get over a loss. This might make Coach McBride sound insane but this story is one of the reasons I loved him so much as a coach.
In 1990 we had a few really bad games to say the least. Coach McBride called a meeting at Rice Stadium....it was freezing cold and we met in the South end zone behind the locker room. Coach was dressed up in a cape (which was a glad trash bag) and ski goggles with a stick in is hand that was supposed to be a wand (I think).... He asked us to write down the bad plays we had made and then he started a fire in a trash can. We all walked up and put the things we wrote in the fire and he did a crazy wand wave and got rid of all the bad vibes. He called himself Captain Voodoo.
That is how I remember it happening but my memory isn't what it used to be.
Bryan, Go Utes!
